City of Pori – First LiDAR Installation

Detection technologies in traffic management are becoming more common – and at Aventi, we are driving this development forward in Finland.

In Pori, Finland’s first wireless LiDAR-based traffic light installation has been deployed. This marks a significant step towards more scalable and sustainable traffic control.

LiDAR advantages in a nutshell – and how they show in Pori:

  • Reliable detection of all road users – In Pori, special attention is paid to ensuring that cyclists and pedestrians are accurately detected, which supports the city’s goals for improving walking and cycling conditions.
  • Fast and simple installation with one technology – Pori avoids complex multi-system setups; one technology is enough for comprehensive detection and traffic counting.
  • Less time and equipment on the road – In practice, this means fewer excavations and less disturbance to traffic – both important goals for the city.
  • Scalable and cost-efficient solution – Pori sees that a single technology can be adapted to various intersections and traffic environments without major additional investments.

Wireless communication supports development

The LiDARs were implemented wirelessly. “The solution aligns with the city’s strategy to widely promote wireless data transfer solutions in various traffic management applications. This helps avoid unnecessary street openings and cabling, as reliable wireless solutions are already available,” says Pasi Haapasalo, Traffic light engineer of the City of Pori.

Collaboration for better solutions

Aventi develops detection technologies and their integration in cooperation with its technology partners La Semaforica and Seyond. Our goal is to provide reliable detection services and high-quality data for the needs of different user groups – from traffic planners to real-time situational awareness systems.
