It’s another big moment for us. We’ve signed a major contract: Aventi will provide the complete traffic light delivery for the Pirkkala–Linnainmaa tramway project.
The project itself is significant, but what makes it especially interesting is that all traffic modes (except the tram) will be detected using LiDAR technology. More than 25 intersections will be equipped with LiDAR sensors, taking the intelligence of traffic lights to an entirely new level.
The use of LiDAR didn’t come out of nowhere.
We’ve been testing and developing the technology intensively over recent years through:
• Interface development and integration work
• Device testing in various weather and environmental conditions
• Training and demonstrations for organizations and professionals on how to utilize the technology
LiDAR doesn’t just detect accurately. It provides real-time, broad, and multifaceted situational awareness, enabling optimization in traffic light control for different modes of transport.
Tero Heino, Project Manager for Technical Systems at NRC Group Finland Oy, describes the benefits of the solution as follows: “By using LiDAR technology, we can reduce the need for adjustments between road and rail systems during construction, which means fewer machines are needed on-site and overall safety improves. At the same time, the environment benefits. The implementation of modifications in the field also becomes much faster. These were strong reasons for choosing this technology.”
The first intersections will be operational by summer 2026, and the traffic light construction for the project will be completed by the end of 2027.
Traffic lights — but on the next level.
The journey toward smoother, safer, and more data-smart traffic continues.
